Abstract

This paper discusses a controversial issue about patenting in biotechnology: could private appropriation of the research results in science-based technologies threaten scientific advances and technology diffusion in this area? To this effect, the role of patents in competitive strategic behavior of firms is described, and the relations between patents and technological features, including joint ventures in innovative activities are analyzed.
