Abstract

The present paper aims at reconstructing the trajectory of technical change in medieval peasant agriculture and its impact on restoring towns, based on economic historiography and on the history of the agrarian sciences. In effect, an attempt is made to focus attention on the role played by family-based agriculture in food supply of urbanized population and on the stimulation of economic activities which expanded merchantilism and opened the way to the Industrial Revolution.
