Abstract

The dominant paradigm for the studies of diffusion of innovations is summarized and it is shown that its theoretical support is basead on the theory of modernization and the dicotomy traditional-modern. This theoretical basis is criticized by the best known researchers in this field. Among these critics and suggested alternative paradigms, the Galjart's is emphasized, because it seems to be particularly promising for the studies of diffusion of innovations in agriculture, and for the rural development programs in the Third World.
