Radioisotopic studies on equine infectious enemia. I. life span of 51Cr-tagged erythrocytes in thoroughbred horses

The half-life of 51Cr-tagged erythrocytes of 11 healthy and 5 naturally infected by equine infectious anemia Thoroughbred horses was determined in Rio de Janeiro, GB, Brazil. The half-life of 51Cr-tagged erythrocytes of healthy horses was 15,5 (S.D. ± 2,08) days, and of anemic horses 8,98 (S.D. ±1,20) days. The difference between the mean values of the two groups was statistically significant (P < 0,01). A compensated hiperhemolysis is reported in the anemic horses with the chronic form of disease.
