About the Journal
Focus and Scope
The Science & Technology Journals (S&TJ) aims to foster reflection and debate on science, technology and innovation (ST&I) and their interfaces with rural development, contributing scientific knowledge to agricultural research strategies and policy.
In addition to publishing, the scientific journal S&TJ aims to disseminate articles that critically analyze the dynamics, research processes, development, innovation and their impacts on the transformations of the agricultural sector, territories, production chains, organizations and consumption.
Within the interdisciplinary scope of the journal, which encompasses the broad area of Social Sciences, the articles published by S&TJ analyze sociotechnical issues linked to rural development, discussing the social, economic, managerial, political and cultural dimensions, among others, of the research, development, technology transfer and innovation process. The dynamics of ST&I are also addressed through studies on ST&I management practices and methods, assessment of ST&I activities, changes in the panorama of agricultural activities, production structure, organizations and institutions, studies of technological trajectories, transformations in the socio-technical profile and through prospective studies.
The S&TJ accepts papers that fall within the thematic areas of science, technology and rural development and that have not yet been published or forwarded to another journal for the same purpose, within the following categories: a) scientific articles; b) review articles.
The issues of the S&TJ cover a wide range of themes, such as: innovation management, intellectual property, agribusiness, family farming, agroecology, sustainable rural development, territorial development, production chains and international trade.
New theoretical, methodological and substantive contributions are expected in the field of ST&I dynamics in agriculture and rural development. Therefore, theoretical and methodological contributions to this treatment are welcome. The content of the articles should be original and include explanations of new contributions.
Peer Review Process
Submitted papers must be unpublished and cannot be simultaneously submitted to another journal for publication.
An initial selection of papers is made by the Technical Editors, before they are forwarded to the scientific advisory board. This preliminary selection takes into account aspects such as: presentation according to the journal's standards; originality of the objective; theoretical basis; updating of the literature review; clarity, precision and consistency of the methodology; discussion of the observed facts in relation to those described in the literature; quality of tables and figures; originality and consistency of conclusions; and writing style.
Rejection of papers in the preliminary analysis phase is communicated to the authors by e-mail. The papers approved in this preliminary selection are then forwarded to at least two scientific advisors, specialists in the respective technical areas covered by the article, for evaluation. These evaluators recommend: approval, conditional approval or non-approval.
The criteria adopted in the evaluation of the content of the texts are the following:
• suitability to the journal's editorial line;
• value of the contribution from a theoretical, methodological and substantive point of view;
• logical and consistent arguments that still allow for counter-arguments by the reader (open discourse);
• correct interpretation of conceptual information and results (absence of fallacious inferences);
• relevance, pertinence and timeliness of bibliographical references.
The authors are solely responsible for the opinions and concepts expressed in their works. However, the editor, with the assistance of specialized consultants, reserves the right to suggest or request recommended or necessary modifications.
Any modifications to the structure or content suggested to the authors must be processed and returned to the editor within 30 (thirty) days.
The sequence of publication of the works is determined by the conclusion of their preparation and submission to the printing office, at which point no additions or modifications to the text will be permitted.
The Editors and Editorial Board of Scienca & Technology Journals (S&TJ) a are authorized to order texts and articles for publication in the journal.
Brief summary of the Science & Technology Journals (S&TJ)
Science & Technology Journals (S&TJ) is a scientific journal published by the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation - Embrapa.
The journal is indexed as Cadernos de Ciência & Tecnologia (CC&T) in the following databases: Agris (FAO), Agricola (USA), Agrobase (BR/Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply), and Base de dados da Pesquisa Agropecuária Brasileira (BR/Embrapa).
The journal was created in 1984 under the title Cadernos de Difusão de Tecnologia and, in 1991, expanded its scope and became known as Cadernos de Ciência & Tecnologia. Its objective is to reflect, debate and disseminate a critical view of science, technology and innovation and agricultural development, with an emphasis on the social, economic, managerial, legal, regulatory, cultural and political aspects involved in this issue.
The journal is now published annually and continuously. Original contributions from researchers, scholars and analysts from various areas and institutions that deal with this topic are welcome.
Contributions must comply with the submission rules and be submitted via the link http://seer.sct.embrapa.br/index.php/cct, with the corresponding author registered.
The S&TJ begins publishing in continuous flow
We would like to announce to our readers and contributors an important change in the journal's system: starting with this first issue of 2019, the journal will fully adopt the continuous publication feature.
This means that, in order to publish new issues, there will no longer be a waiting period for all contributions to be consolidated (with revisions and corrections made).
The page numbering will be independent of that of the previous article, a problem that has always made the layout of previous issues difficult and delayed. In this new form of S&TJ – as a continuous publication –, this difficulty has been completely overcome. Once the work is laid out, it will be published immediately. For this reason, the traditional form of pagination (and article citation) that we have been using for all these years will be changed. The new article page identifier, known as elocation-id, will allow a completed work – as previously mentioned – to be published immediately, and from then on it can be read and cited by peers.
These are editorial innovations strongly encouraged by the practices of, among others, the Scientific Electronic Library (SciELO) and the Brazilian Association of Scientific Editors (ABEC). They are transformation routes that will make the journal more compatible with the contemporary digital form of publishing.
Journal History
The journal was created in 1984, under the title Cadernos de Difusão de Tecnologia (Technology Diffusion Notebooks). The title was changed to Cadernos de Ciência & Tecnologia (Science & Technology Journals) in 1991.
The aim of Science & Technology Journals (S&TJ) is to encourage reflection and debate, based on texts that critically analyze technological and socioeconomic issues related to rural development. They discuss the social, political and cultural implications of the process of generating, developing and transferring technology. They also address scientific trends in agribusiness from institutional, social, political, cultural, managerial and market perspectives. Topics such as intellectual property, sustainable development, territorial development, family farming, R&D management, and the participation of agricultural products in the domestic and foreign markets are addressed in the various editions of the Science & Technology Journals.
