Author Guidelines

1. Thematic framework

The CC&T journal accepts unpublished scientific or review articles that focus on the dynamics and processes of science, technology and innovation (ST&I) in agriculture and rural development.

The articles may address social, economic, political, regulatory, cultural and management perspectives, among others, within the interdisciplinary scope of the journal, which encompasses the broad area of Social Sciences.

The studies should preferably address ST&I processes and their interfaces with agriculture, agro-industrial chains (from inputs to consumption) and rural development. However, theoretical and methodological contributions to this approach are also welcome.

The dynamics of ST&I can be analyzed through studies on R&D and innovation management practices and methods, assessment of R&D and innovation activities, changes in the landscape of agricultural activities, production structure, organizations and institutions, studies of technological trajectories, transformations in the socio-technical profile and foresight studies.

The content of manuscripts should be original and should explicitly highlight original contributions. New theoretical, methodological and substantive contributions are expected in the field of ST&I dynamics in agriculture and rural development.

The journal is concerned with the quality of submissions, taking into account the impact in terms of citations. Above all, its purpose is to inform agricultural research policy and strategies.

2. Submission
Originals in Portuguese, English and Spanish are accepted. The journal encourages the submission of papers in English.

Submissions must be made digitally, on this website, by the corresponding author, who must register as an AUTHOR with ORCID.

The submission process consists of five steps: 1) registration; 2) transfer of the manuscript; 3) inclusion of metadata (names of the authors of the work, contact emails, institutional affiliation, article title, abstract, terms for indexing, etc.); 4) transfer of supplementary documents; and 5) confirmation.

Two files must accompany the submission:

a) The text of the work to be submitted. The form of presentation of the work to be submitted is detailed in item 4 of these Guidelines for authors.

b) Cover letter. The cover letter must contain:

- title of the article;

- name(s) of the author(s);

- institutional affiliation of each author;

- full address of each institution of affiliation;

- contribution of each author to the scientific work using the CRediT taxonomy: https://credit.niso.org/;
- explicit statement that the article has not been submitted to any other journal for publication.
c) When necessary, supplementary files (e.g. data and research instruments).

3. Evaluation procedures

a) After screening, the editor submits the submitted works for critical evaluation by two to three scientific consultants of the journal, who recommend: approval, conditional approval or non-approval. The criteria adopted are the following:

• Adequacy to the editorial line of the journal.
• Value of the contribution from a theoretical, methodological and substantive point of view.
• Logical, consistent argumentation, which still allows counter-argumentation by the reader (open discourse).
• Correct interpretation of conceptual information and results (absence of fallacious inferences).
• Relevance, pertinence and currentness of bibliographic references.

b) The authors are solely responsible for the opinions and concepts expressed in their work. However, the editor, with the assistance of specialized consultants, reserves the right to suggest or request recommended or necessary modifications.

c) Modifications to the structure or content suggested to the authors must be processed and returned to the editor within 30 (thirty) days.

d) The publication of the work is carried out after the stages of textual revision, standardization of references and citations, layout and creation of the proof. After the work is approved for publication, no additions or modifications to the text will be permitted.

e) The Editors may request the author to use a specialized textual revision service and present a language revision certificate when necessary.

f) The Editors and the Editorial Board of Science & Technology Journals may order articles to be submitted to the journal.

4. Presentation format

a) Size – articles must be presented in Word, with a maximum size of 30 pages, with 1.5 line spacing and 2 cm margins on the sides, top and bottom. The font used is Times New Roman, size 12 for the text and size 8 for footnotes. Only black should be used for the entire text.

b) Titles, Authors, Abstract, Indexing terms and Index terms – article titles in Portuguese and English must be written in bold, with initial letter of the first word capitalized, with a maximum of 20 words. They must be clear and concise and express the content of the work. The name Embrapa should not appear in the title of any article. Write the authors' surnames in full, with initial capital letters. The abstract and summary should not exceed 200 words each. They should contain a summary of the objectives, development and main conclusion of the work. The content of the Abstract should be a faithful translation of the content of the Summary. It is also required to indicate at least three and at most six "Terms for indexing" and "Index terms". These expressions should be written in bold, with lowercase letters, except for the initial letter, and followed by a colon (which is also in bold). The words that make up the "Terms for indexing" and "Index terms", which should be in clear (not bold), should be separated by commas and begin with lowercase letters, and should not contain terms that already appear in the title.

c) At the bottom of the first page, there should be a note for each author, indicating the name of the institution of affiliation with the complete address of the institution and the author's e-mail address.

d) Introduction – the word Introduction should be written in capital letters and placed in the center of the page, without bold. The introduction should take up no more than two pages and present the objective of the work, its importance and context, the scope and possible limitations of the study.

e) Development – the development constitutes the core of the work, which contains the methodological procedures, the results of the research and their critical discussion. However, the word Development should never serve as a title for this core; it is up to the author to use the titles that best suit the nature of his/her work. The author is not necessarily obliged to use the terms traditionally used in journal articles in the exact and biological areas, such as: material and methods, results and discussion. Whatever the title options, it should be positioned in the center of the page, written in capital letters, without bold. As for subtitles, when applicable, only the initial letter of the first word should be capitalized, and they should be located on the left margin, written continuously, in bold. If there is a title that is shorter than the subtitle (i.e., if it is within a subtitle), only the initial letter of the first word should be capitalized, and it should be located on the left margin, written continuously, in clear text (without bold). If there is also a title that is even shorter than this, mentioned in the previous sentence, only the initial letter of the first word should be capitalized, and it should be located on the left margin, written continuously, in italics and in clear text (without bold).

f) Conclusions – the word Conclusions, or an equivalent expression (Final considerations, for example), should be written in capital letters and in the center of the page, without bold. Conclusions are drawn based on the objective and results of the work. They cannot simply consist of a summary of the results; they must also present the new findings of the research and their implications. They must confirm or reject the hypotheses formulated in the Introduction, if applicable. Inferences about the possible application of the results obtained to similar situations and circumstances are allowed. It is recommended to discuss the limitations of the method used, especially regarding internal and external validity. It is also appropriate to present questions that were not answered by the work, but that may be the subject of future research.

g) Acknowledgements (optional topic) – the word Acknowledgements should be written in capital letters, in the center of the page, without bold. Acknowledgements should be brief and direct, beginning with “to”, “to”, “to” or “to” (referring to people or institutions).

h) Citations – all citations must be referenced. When included in the sentence, the authors' surnames must be written in upper and lower case with the date in parentheses. If not included, they must also be written in upper and lower case within the parentheses, separated from the dates by commas. To insert citations, as well as references, with the adaptations of NBR 10520 (citation) and NBR 6023 (references), we recommend using the Mendeley reference manager (see item k).

Citation with two authors: separate the surnames with "&" both inside and outside the parentheses.

Citation with more than two authors: write the surname of the first author, followed by the expression et al., in normal font.

Citation of several works by different authors: write the surnames of the authors in alphabetical order, followed by chronological order, and separated by semicolons.

Citing more than one document by the same authors: do not repeat the authors' surnames; and the dates of the works, in chronological order, are separated by commas.

Citing several documents by the same author, published in the same year: add lowercase letters, in alphabetical order, after the date and without spacing, according to the list of references.

Citing a citation: write the surname(s) of the author(s) of the original document, followed by the expression "cited by" and the citation of the work consulted. Reference only the work consulted.

Direct citations containing up to three lines: must appear between double quotation marks, forming part of the normal paragraph. After the year of publication, add the page(s) of the cited excerpt (in parentheses and separated by commas). Citations within the citation must be enclosed in single quotation marks.

Long direct quotations (four or more lines): they will be highlighted from the text in a special paragraph (blocked) and indented 4 cm from the left margin, in single space, in font size 9 and without quotation marks.

i) Figures and Tables – figures and tables must be cited in the text in numerical sequential order, written with the initial letter capitalized, followed by the corresponding number. Citations may appear in parentheses or integrated into the text. Tables and figures must be presented in the text, in a location close to where they are cited. The title of the table must be written without bold and positioned above it. The title of the figure must also be written without bold, but positioned below it. Tables and figures must be cited in the text. Figures, images, tables, charts and graphs must be authored. If the article needs to include any of these elements from another publication, in addition to the complete reference information for the original document, the author must provide written authorization from the person responsible for the publication in question so that the element can be republished in his/her article. Likewise, for the publication of photographs of people in the foreground, the author must provide written authorization from the person(s) photographed.

In the titles of figures and tables, the words “Figure” and “Table”, as well as their respective numbers (which must be inserted after the word “Figure” or “Table”) and the period, which must be inserted after the number of the respective figure or table, must be in bold. Examples: Figure 1. or Table 1. However, the text that follows these terms must not be in bold.

j) Footnotes – footnotes must be substantive in nature (not bibliographical) and kept to the minimum necessary.

k) References – the word References should be written in capital letters in the center of the page. All references should be cited and should preferably contain current sources, mainly journal articles, but may contain older classic works directly related to the study topic. References should contain the surnames of all authors (do not use et al.), and the names of the journals should be written in full, without any abbreviations. When available, the DOI (Digital Object Identifier) should be part of the reference. Science & Technology Journals (S&TJ) encourage the provision of a direct and valid electronic address, with the last access date, of references made available electronically. References should be presented in the original language in which they were published. They should be presented in alphabetical order and standardized according to the adaptations of ABNT NBR 6023, using the models below, which constitute the most common cases. The following style can be found in the Mendeley reference manager, applying the reference style "Pesquisa Agropecuaria Brasileira (Portuguese Brazil)":
