Abstract

CHARACTERIZATION AND DIAGNOSIS OF IRRIGATION SYSTEMS AND WATER MANAGEMENT PRACTICES IN THE CITRICULTURE OF THE NORTH OF THE STATE OF SÃO PAULO

ABSTRACT

The use of irrigation in the production of citrus fruits has increased. The direct impact of its misuse is excessive water consumption and contamination of the environment. This study aimed at determining the technological level of the irrigation system practiced by citrus growers in the north of the state of São Paulo. From May to August 2007, twenty properties were classified according to their irrigated area in two groups: G1 (up to 52 ha) and G2 (53 ha and above). The irrigation equipment, the knowledge regarding this activity, and the methodologies and equipment used in the properties for the irrigation plan were evaluated. Furthermore, improvements in the current irrigation management were proposed. The results showed that the citrus producers have been interested in using the water for irrigation rationally; however, the lack of technical monitoring has been the main reason for the poor quality of this practice.

Index terms: efficiency, irrigation management, water consumption.
