Given the potential of Geographical Indication (GI) to preserve local traditions in the agricultural and food sectors, and stimulate regional development, the GI has been attracting the interest of several groups of producers in Brazil. The most significant advance in this area occurred among the winemakers of Serra Gaúcha, a region in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, with decisive participation of Embrapa. In this paper, through literature review and interviews with producers and a representative of the company, the goal was to understand the role of Embrapa in the governance of local GIs.
