The current situation in the Brazilian milk production chain is discussed, considering the production structure, the dynamics underway, and the challenges and predictable consequences for the small-scale milk production. Winners and losers are revealed in the process of technological innovation, which is in an accelerated march in this productive chain. The reduction of the number of producers was of 13%, in general, and of 31% in the small scale production from 2006 to 2017, pointing out the key vectors of this process. Thus, both a form of organization and a set of processes are indicated to help producers of different production scales, and to encourage them to face the problem with determination, to abandon poverty, and to remain in business.
