The objective of this study was to examine the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in the reconfiguration of scientific and technological research activity. AI has played an increasing role in the production of scientific texts, with impacts on the notions of authorship and credit. In addition, it brings epistemological and sociological implications for data production and hypothesis testing. This study seeks to provide a general contextualization of AI and its related, different technologies, based on the framework of the field of social studies of science and technology. This research is based on a comprehensive literature review and the analysis of news reports, as well as technical and promotional materials on AI. We argue that the impact of AI on the production of data and academic texts means important changes in the scientific practice. This work is expected to stimulate new lines of research and debates over the intersection of AI and science, technology, innovation, and society.
