Abstract

This article presents an analysis on sustainability, specifically on the Environmental Sustainability Index (ESI) of the Brazilian states in 2014. The objective of this article is to calculate the ESI using the factor analysis technique with the following variables: planted or harvested area, quantity of fertilizers supplied to the final consumer (producer), average water consumption per capita, loss rate in water distribution, number of heat spots, CO2 emissions and electricity production. Analyses were carried out using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software. In addition to the factor analysis, a cluster analysis was performed to support the development of more powerful public policies for states with similar levels of sustainability. The results showed that 23 states ( 82.14%) were placed in just one cluster, with an alarming level of ESI, whereas the other states presented a critical level of ESI. Furthermore, analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed, and it showed that the variables CO2 emissions and number of heat spots were the ones that best differentiated the three clusters.
