Organic agriculture is a promising income alternative for small holders, due to an increasing world demand for healthy food. However, it is necessary to consider the different factors that can help small holders to succeed in this activity. This paper presents an overview on the different branches of alternative agriculture, and emphasizes the theme on the following issues: a) current status and prospects for domestic and external market of organic products; b) requirements for certification and commercialization of organic foods in the country and regulation that supports those processes; and c) pros and cons for small farmers to adopt organic agriculture as their production strategy. Finally, some suggestions for actions are dispensed for the public sector and for small holders so that organic agriculture can be a stronger opportunity for this group of farmers.Downloads
