An increasing reduction in public expenditures in agricultural research is evident, in spite of the acknowledged high return which this type of investiment has provided in many countries, among them Brazil. In view of this situation, some questions are raised and discussed in light of existing theory and of an empirical analysis of the Brazilian case. Looking for answers for these questions, new insights are cast upon the role of agricultural research in Brazil.Downloads
