Abstract

The Brazilian Corporation for Agricultural Research (EMBRAPA) reward system was analyzed as a conglomerate of money reward and priviledges. They aim at atracting the employee, motivating him to progress and to improve his knowledge and ablities. Basic payment, added advantages and fringe benefits were considered. External contingencies and international situation were examined as they influence the reward system. Data from a random sample of employees permited to analyze the influence of ability, occupational opportunity and manpower on wages. The most important one turned out to be education. The higher the level, the higher the pay for another year of schooling. Previous experience, decision power of the highest position held by the employee, sex, foreign language proficiency, one's position visibility, branch visibility all revealed positive impact on salary. It was suggested a change in the reward system of the administrative positions when ocuppied by researchers, improvement in the influence of non academic training on salary and leveling of payment among sexes.
