The performance of some corn (Zea mays L.) cultivars was studied in two different localities of the northern region of Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil, during the growing season of 1978/1979. In each trial ten cultivars of normal and early corn were tested using the experimental design of complete randomized blocks with four replications, "Sintético-IPEACS", developed in Rio de Janeiro State, was used as control in the experiments envolving the normal cultivars, and showed a potential production very similar to that of the best hybrids introduced in the region. Hybrid Ag 401, although not statistically different from the control showed the highest production of grains. Among the early cultivars, hybrids Ag 7813, Ag 7071 and C 507 were the most promising ones. No influence of environment on any of the groups of cultivars was found.
