Abstract

The effects of antibiotics plus a sulfa compound added to a suckling pig ration were studied. Twenty-eight three week old animals were used. The 18 males and 10 females, all by the same boar, were divided at random into two experimental groups. The total experimental period was 175 days, divided into periods of 85 days for each litter. The following results were obtained: a) The animals receiving the ration plus antibiotics and sulfa gained an average of 0.240 kg per day; they consumed in addition to the sows milk 0.419 kg of ration daily. The feeding efficiency was 1:1.7 and the total cost per kg of gain was NCr$ 1.11. b) Those animals fed the untreated ration showed an average daily gain of 0.200 kg. In addition to the sows milk they consumed 0.367 kg daily with a feeding efficiency of 1:1.8. The total cost per kg of gain was NCr$ 1.22.
