Resumo

Over recent decades, the Misiones Department, located in southern Paraguay, has shifted from an almost exclusively natural pasture-based traditional livestock production region, to the major rice production area of the country, soybeans maize, and family farm crops are also grown. Producers face production risk due to climate variability and change, and due to a lack of studies and analysis of meteorological variables in the area. The major risk are related to precipitation, including excess, deficiencies, intense events and frosts. We used RClimDex to analyze extreme event trends, specifically precipitation and temperature values; and the Standard Precipitation Index (SPI) to analyze drought. Results show that drought is a recurrent phenomenon and that it alternates with periods of significant rainfall excesses. First frost is June seven, the last frost occurs on August two, and the frost period is on average 57 days. We found significant increases in intense precipitation and on wet days. A negative trend was observed in summer days, monthly maximum value of daily maximum temperature, hot days, cold nights and daytime temperature range. These results properly communicated may help producers avoid and adapt to climate risk.

Interdisciplinary ag and livestock ecologist and ag engineer with a focus on adaptation to climate variability and global change through adaptation and increased resilience in complex human-ecological systems. Sustainable intensification of integrated agricultural and livestock systems. Decision support for adaptation. Human dimensions in sustainable productive landscapes and co-management of forests, water resources and other natural areas. Biodiversity conservation as support of the economy and society. My work across academia, the public, private, and civil society sector on two continents has provided me with a unique outlook and skills for operational environmental management, research, policy formulation, and consulting in sustainable agriculture, livestock, other natural resource, urban, and industrial systems.

I have been a senior research scientist in the Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering at the University of Florida, the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences of the University of Miami, and currently at the Center for Appropriate Technology of the School of Science and Technology at the Catholic University in Asunción. I was named outstanding researcher for the Southeast Climate Consortium (SECC) in the United States and its leader in the assessment and human dimensions team, as well as the interim leader of the SECC's water resources management team, and member of the agriculture and extension teams. I was a member National Commission of Climate Change of Paraguay and participated in COPs 22 and 23. I published books, chapters in scientific books and articles, and was co-developer with a large team and stakeholders of the AgroClimate system to support decision making to manage climate risk. I served as scientific and environmental advisor at Itaipu Binacional, where I directed climate, water, agriculture, biodiversity, and other programs and represented the company at national and international meetings on climate, sustainable development, and the conservation.
