Abstract

The problem of sustainability in agricultural activities is directly related to environmental, economical and social impacts generated by the use of the agricultural technologies. The discussion on the sustainable rural development is based on the analysis of technical choices made by rural producers and their effects on the efficiency of production and upon environmental changes generated in the process. This work is aimed toward an economic evaluation of planting technologies in the Brazilian savannahs, in terms of private and social returns. It intends to compare the efficiency in the combination of inputs and their private costs with the generation of environmental externalities and their social costs. The basic idea is to contrast no tillage and conventional tillage systems as to their private and social costs.
