Abstract

The paper aims to discuss some concepts regarding the rural development. Further, a measure of rural development (Rural Development Index, RDI) is proposed. The RDI is composed of four partial indexes concerning social, economic, demographic and environmental aspects of the development. The RDI is then calculated for the "municípios" of the State of São Paulo, using data from several sources. Based on the value of the index the "municípios" are then classified into three levels of rural development (high, medium and low).
