Abstract

Organic agriculture has been presenting itself as an important tool to make small family farms feasible. To identify the main reasons that lead these farmers to change to this practice, semistructured interviews were applied to farmers from properties in the region of Rio do Sul, in state of Santa Catarina, Brazil. Through the technique of content analysis, it was possible to list the main reasons, indicating as positive aspects the improvement of health and improvement of satisfaction in the work developed; and as obstacles shortage of labor, dissemination and commercialization of the product, among other points cited, such as those related to certification, future prospects and the ideology of working with organic agriculture. It was concluded that the benefits of cultivation with organics go beyond the suppression of the use of pesticides, the main one being the improvement of the farmer’s quality of life.
