This study aimed to analyze the economic viability of the upland rice cultivar ‘BRS A501 CL’, in the region covered by the Brazilian states for which it was recommended, and to describe the economic benefit generated by the Clearfield (CL) cropping system, in 2019, for this region. The new cultivar ‘BRS A501 CL’ was compared with the conventional one ‘BRS Esmeralda’. An analysis of the investment in the research that developed the ‘BRS A501 CL’ was also carried out. The results show that, in 2019, ‘BRS A501 CL’ was adopted in 11,070 ha, producing 46,494 tonnes of paddy rice, with a yield of 4,200 kg ha-1 (600 kg ha-1 more than ‘BRS Esmeralda’), at a unitary (bag of 60 kg) production cost of BRL 34.21, which is BRL 9.20 lower than that of ‘BRS Esmeralda’). The profitability for the producers with the new technology was 70% with ‘BRS A501 CL’, and 11% with ‘BRS Esmeralda’. The analysis of investment in research for the development of ‘BRS A501 CL’ does not allow of a conclusive assessment yet, as only one year has passed since its adoption.
