The role of biotechnology as a suport to plant breeding is discussed in this paper. The plant breeder when working in the identification and selection of useful genetic variation needs to assess the whole plant. This kind of assessment cannot be replaced, so far. However, it can be supported by celular works on tissue culture, on chromosome engineering or by manipulating macromolecules hat are carriers of genetic information (DNA-recombinant technology or genetic engineering). The perspectives of tissue culture are emphasized, mainly in relation to the use of haploids and somaclonal variation.
