Abstract

This research was carried out in Araruna, Arara and Lagoa Seca, Paraiba, Brazil, in order to study the following aspects of Phaseolus vulgaris crop: planting system (ridges and flat planting) plant spacing and plants/hill. The treatments were combined in a factorial experiment 2 x 4 x 3 in a randomized complete block design with four replications. Data on final stand, grain production (kg/ha), pods/plant, seeds/pod and weight of 100 seeds were collected. The "ridge planting system" outyielded the conventional "flat planting system" in 200 kg/ha and appeared to have a more stable production over different plant populations tested. The best treatment combination was the "ridge planting" with three plants per hill spaced 20 centimeters, with a production of 1,164 kg/ha. In this spacing, the flat system also gave the highest yield (1,045 kg/ha).
