Abstract

Susceptibility to leaf rust (Puccinia recondita Rob. ex. Desm. trítici) in 105 wheat cultivars were investigated at Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, during 1969, 1970, 1971 and 1972. The cultivars Buck Manantial, E11-D, Jaral, Multiplicacion 14, Pel 14933-64, Pel 11806-85, Pel 10143-69, Pergamino Gaboto, PF 16-1286/66, PF 16-1292/66, Piamontes INTA, Rafaela MAG, S 69, S 70, S 71, Son 64 x Ska- LR 64A and Son 64 x TzPP - Nai 60 (A) showed outstanding resistance to leaf rust under field conditions. Severe leaf rust predominated during these years. IAS 19, 2, 27A and 28 were the predominant leaf rust strains grown in Pelotas and the most popular in all wheat growing regions during that time.
