Abstract

On the average cow-pea planted beside the sugarcane furrow or 20 cm from it were more productive than when planted farther away from the sugarcane row. The yield of beans with the usual growing were 520 kg/ha for the cow-pea "Macássar Quarenta Dias"; 196 kg/ha for the Phaseolus vulgaris variety "Vagem roxa"; and 196 kg/ha for the black beans "Sacavém" and "Costa Rica". The yield of beans in the experimental trial were 1339 kg/ha of cow-pea "Macássar Quarenta Dias" and 397 kg/ha of black beans. The average yield of 140 t/ha of sugarcane represents a very high value. The F test values show no influence of intercropping sugarcane and beans on yields of either.
