Abstract

Technical and structural changes are taking place in the agribusiness segments, including the Brazilian corn chain, due to the concern of consumers and regulatory agencies for products considered sustainable and socially correct. The objective of this article was to identify, practices indicating these changes, reported in the literature, and contextualize them in relation to the Brazilian agricultural reality. For this purpose, by the perspective of prospective studies, a questionnaire was applied to 72 rural producers, and 23 interviews were carried out with specialists of the corn production chain. The questionnaires involved corn producers who cultivate 206,000 hectares spread across 15 Brazilian states. The responses indicated that producers already rotate 13 crops, practice no-tillage and second crop, the application of biological products, cover crop, and crop-livestock integration. Therefore, Brazil is relatively well-positioned with regard to sustainable agricultural practices and the adoption of technologies. However, progress is still needed for traceability, combating illegal deforestation, encouraging the ecological industry and sustainable processing, controlling of groundwater contamination,  encouraging sustainable consumption, and reducing losses and waste.
