Two field trials were carried out in at the Estação Experimental in Caçador, SC, Brazil, in a Humic Brown Latosol Dystrophic soil 1981 and 1982 in order to identify garlic (Allium sativum L.) cultivars with chance to crop during the Brazilian of-season. Only few cultivars were able to crop at these climate conditions (in 1981 the cvs. Branco Mineiro, Cajuru, Centenário and Juréia; in 1982 the cvs. Branco Mineiro, Cajuru and Chinês), but their yields were of poor quality for commercial use. There were a) germination and harvesting in a broad period within almost every cultivar; b) the plant cycle also varied among the precocious cultivars within the years and a cycle prolongation of the lag cycle cultivars. Therefore January is not a recommended month for planting garlic in Santa Catarina highland.
