The effect of sowing time on the yield and on some agronomic characteristics of flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) was assessed during two years at the Centro Nacional de Pesquisa de Trigo (CNPT) (National Wheat Research Center) in the middle plateau of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Three flax cultivars, Dutterin, linott and Taperaju, seeded at three dates (1952 on 05.26, 06.09 and 06.23; 1983 on 05.24. 06.07 and 06.21) were the treatments evaluated. In 1982 cultivar Linott presented the heighest yield, and in 1953 by Taperaju and Dutterin. In 1982, the heighest yields were obtained at the first and second seeding time, but in 1983, there were no differences for this factor. It was noticed that delaying seeding time reduced the period from emergence to flowering.
