Study of dairy cows uterine infections

Rectal palpation and vaginoscopic examination of 3,408 cows from 50 herds in the Zona da Mata, region of Minas Gerais, Brazil, showed 1,634 pregnant and 1,774 non-pregnant cows. Amongst the non-pregnant cows, 384 (21.6%) had uterine infections, made up of 186 (10.5%) with first-degree or catarrhal infection, 162 (9.1%) of second-degree or mucopurulent and the remaining 36 (2%) of third-degree or purulent. Additional observations were made on the time between calving an the diagnoses of the pathology of the infected cows, their body condition and ovary activity. The results of these observations are discussed.
