The aim of this paper was to evaluate the agricultural and industrial qualities of eight cultivars of sugar cane (Saccharum officinarum) and to verify their adaptability to the climatic and soil conditions in the extension of the area colonized by the Transamazon road in the Pará State, Brazil. The experiment was made from March 1980 to October 1983. An experimental design in randomized blocks with eight treatments and three replications was used. The cultivars that presented the largest yields were: CB 49-260, B 43-62, NA 56-79, CP 57-603, CO 1007 and CO 997 Their productions were similar ones. In relation to the technological characteristics (brix per cent, pol per cent of the total broth), the best cultivars were B 43-62, CP 57-603, NA 56-79 and CO 997, which presented values above the minimum to be considered as ripe canes.
