A field experiment was carried out from 1975 through 1983 in order to study the agronomic performance of sugarcane varieties in Santa Maria, RS, Brazil. A randomized complete-block design with four replications was used. The harvest of the first planting, 20 months after the planting time, produced 161.3 t/ha, and the production of the first ratoon was 122.1 t/ha and decreased 42% in the second ratoon, in relation the first planting havest. The varieties IAC 50-134, IAC 54-439, CB 56-126, IAC 51-205, CB 46-52, Co 798, CB 40-69 and CB 52-5 showed yields varying from 141 to 129 t/ha, respectively, as an average of the three first harvests. Between these varieties, the IAC 51-205, CB 46-52, CB 41-76, CB 56-126 and CD 40-69 showed the brix % Juice varying from 20.8 to 19.9.
