Infection in soybean by cowpea severe mottle virus was observed for the first time in Teresina, PI, Brazil, in 1984. The identification of this virus was done through the symptoms in the host plant, by serology in double immunodiffusion, using leaf extract from, infected plants, with antiserum of the following viruses: soybean mosaic virus, cowpea severe mosaic virus, southern bean mosaic virus and cowpea rugose mosaic virus. Positive results in heterologous reaction were obtained just for the last virus which is serologically related, but distinct of cowpea severe mottle virus. The BR 81-1265 line was the most affected in the field, among the seven cultivars studied.
