During the period of 1977/80, five experiments were carried out at the Campos Experimental Station, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil, to study the influence of plant populations for intercropping com and beans. It was demonstrated that the corn yield was not influenced by intercropping, and that two harvests of beans in the same corn crop were possible. The results showed that the most compatible plant combination were 40 thousand plants of corn/ha and 120 thousand plants of beans/ha for simultaneous sowing, whereas 240 thousand plants of beans/ha was more efficient for relay cropping after the physiological maturation of corn.
