A field experiment was conducted to evaluate nodulation and grain yield of beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) planted between rows of corn after completed maturity. More nodules were observed and they remained for a longer time on the roots of bean plants associated with corn than in monoculture. Concerning grain yield, despite the larger nodule mass produced in the relay crop system, the monoculture showed larger yields in all treatments independently of nitrogen supply.
