The objective of this study was to determine biochemical values in the blood serum of local goats that undergo a nutritional stress during the dry season and hence possibly may show subnormal reproductive performance. A knowledge of these values may help in diagnosis and prophylaxis. The concentrations of total protein and glucose were estimated in the blood serum of 153 does of different breeds (mixed Anglo-Nubian, Canindé-Repartida, Marota, Moxotó and SRD-Sem Raça Definida) in different physiological states during two years. The physiological states were: before, during first-third and during last-third of pregnancy and during lactation. The total protein was influenced by breeds, physiological states (P < .0005) and type of pregnancy (single or multiple; P < .05). The variation in glucose was influenced by physiological states (P < .0005) and type of pregnancy (P <.01).
