Abstract

An experiment was carried out in red latosol, emphasizing border effect Five cultivars of rice were used (‘IAC-25', 'Tainan', 'IET-1444', 'Fernandes', and ‘IRAT-13’), seeded in rows of 0.50 m width with 50 seeds per linear meter, laid out in blocks by chance, with four repetitions. The harvest was made by positions differentiated within the plot and the analyses in the scheme of subdivided plots were made. A strong plot and border effect on the production of grains was verified in all the cultivars, while the lateral border effect was seen only in the 'Fernandes' and 'IRAT-13' cultivars. Plant height was affected in any of the situations. It was concluded that it is necessary to use and borders with 1 m of distance from each extremity, and lateral borders with two rows.
