Abstract

Aqueous extracts of Eucalyptus sp. litter showed antimicrobial activities when mixed with culture medium and inoculated with soil suspension. The bacterial growth was strongly inhibited by the aqueous extracts, however the number of fungal colony did not change by the addition of extracts in the culture medium. The inhibitory principles were isolated by extraction with organic solvents and thin layer chromatography. The extracts obtained by the simple and sequencial method were applied in the thin layer chromatography plates and the inhibitory components separated by various chromatographic solvent systems. After the plates to be bioautographed with bacterial suspension it was possible to isolate from three to six antibacterial components.
