An extensive bibliographical review on the importance of low temperatures in rice cultivars was made. At the same time, an evaluation of genotypes tolerant to cool temperatures was initiated in the south area of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. From the results obtained, it was concluded that temperatures below 16 Celsius degrees are directly influencing rice productivity because of floret sterility especially when occurring near the beginning of flowering, i.e., the putative microsporogenic stage. Bluebelle (local check). Calrose 76, CR 126-42-1, IR 2403-PLPB-7-2-1-3B, IR 3941-45, IR 3941-77, JC 99, K 35-67-2-1-3-1, Oirase, Shimokita, Some Wake, Suweon 235, Towada (ACC 8318), TY 12 and Yamabiko, presented in this study with temperature data, showed the best cold tolerance. As expected, the Japonica-tike group showed higher tolerance than other groups. Similar performance was noticed in the genotypes carrying red kernels.
