This research was conducted to evaluate ten sugar cane varieties for some agronomical and technological characteristics and degree of infestation of the borer Diatraea spp., in Redenção Ceará, from october 1978 to october 1979. The varieties were ranked in descending order for the following characteristics: weight of colms/ha: CP 60-1, C8 45-3, CO 419, IANE 55-17, NA 56-62 and CO 997; kg of sugar/t colms IANE 55-17, CO 997, B 4362, CO 1007, NA 56-62 and CP 60-1 and tonnage sugar/ha: IANE 55-17, CP 60-1, CB 45-3, CO 419, NA 56-62 and CO 997. The fiber percentage of every variety tested was considered normal according to the international standards. The infestation of the sugar cane borer was rated low only for the varieties: CB 45-3, CP 51-22 and IANE 55-17.
