Abstract

To check the repellency of Mulatinho beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) to Callosobruchus analis Fabr. the number of egg layed and their development was compared with those on cowpeas (Vigna sinensis Endl.). Although eggs were layed on both, fewer were deposited on Mulatinho beans and there was no emergence. Further tests resulted that no eggs were deposited on Mulatinho endosperm. It was concluded that failure of the eggs to develop on these beans was due to a physical or chemical barrier present in the endosperm.
