Abstract

A study of relationships between prices paid and source of production was made in the wholesale orange market in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais. The data were obtained through the Secretary of Agriculture's Statistics and Harvest Forecast Service, between July 1965 and July 1966. The varieties of oranges studied were: Bahia, Pêra, Serra d'Água, Campista and Barão. The following relationships were found: a) the orchards in Minas Gerais are planted without due concern as to market characteristics of the product and profit opportunities; b) the variety “Pêra” of Minas Gerais origin, enters the Belo Horizonte market in quantities equal to receipts of the same variety from São Paulo; c) the prices obtained for the product of Minas Gerais origin are always lower than the ones obtained for the same variety of oranges coming from São Paulo.
