Abstract

Data from 801 parturitions of 255 Large White sows, bred in the subtropical region were analysed by the Least Squares method to estimate heritability and correlations (genetic, phenotypic and environmental) of sow productivity traits. The found estimates of heritability were: number of stillborn, 0.487 ± 0.153; litter size at birth, 0.199 ± 0.089; litter weight at birth, 0.125 ± 0.070; litter size at 21 days of age, 0.053 ± 0.052; litter weight at 21 days of age, 0.099 ± 0.064; litter size at weaning, 0.057 ± 0.053; litter weight at weaning, 0.191 ± 0.087. These values shows little response to selection of the traits, exception of number of stillborn. The estimates of genetic, phenotypic and environmental correlation did not show important antagonisms among the traits. Correlated responses to selection were also studied.
