Abstract

The present work shows the determination of relative results of T3 Triiodothyronine and T4 Thyroxine through the Radioimmunoassay (RIA) in newborn water buffalo calves between 0 and 96 hours after birth. It was observed that serum levels of both hormones are very high in early age animals, when compared to adult animals (concentrations between 211.22 ± 0.90 to 265.62 ± 0.96 ng/dL for T3, and 5.97 ± 3.21 to 11.62 ± 3.04 mg/dL for T4, between 0 and 96 hours after birth, respectively). A maximum peak level for T3 and T4 was also observed in the third hour after birth, which decreased significantly 96 hours after birth. The sex factor seems to have a marked influence on the hormonal levels of both hormones, with higher concentration in female calves.
