A path-coefficient analysis was made on six characters in guaraná (Paullinia cupana var. sorbilis H.B.K.) seedlings. The data utilized were obtained from a study of the genetic correlation between the characters of shoots and roots. The basal diameter of the stem was the shoot character that showed the highest direct positive effect in the correlation with the dry weight of the roots. On the other hand, the dry weight of the whole shoot showed the highest direct negative effect. It was concluded that the basal diameter of the stem is the character that may be considered as the indicator of the root system size.
