Two segregant populations of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), one with 50% and the other with 75% of the alleles of the Rio Tibagi cultivar were obtained and grown in the winter, in southern Minas Gerais, Brazil until the F5 and F4 generation, respectively. Two hundred and ninety eight progenies were taken, which were evaluated in the winter, and those most promising were selected during three successive cycles. Considering the results of all evaluations, eight progenies with high grain yield, cold tolerance, upright plants and grain similar to that of the Carioca cultivar were selected.
