A field experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of pre-planting of velvetbean (Mucuna aterrima), crotalaria (Crotalaria juncea), pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan) cv. Kaki, native vegetation, and soil preparation on root yield and starch content of cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz). At the Soil National Research Center-CLAPS-EMBRAPA, Senador Canedo, GO, cassava cv. IAC 12-829 was planted randomly, after ground clearing or incorporation of the green manures, in a distrophic Dark-Red Latosol, during 1988-1990 season. The experimental design was a complete randomized block with four replications. The results showed significant differences in root and starch yield, specially in the treatment with incorporation of green manures. No significant differences in the starch content was observed.
