The research was carried out in 1992/93, to identify the causes of boll rot in the cotton crop, to quantify these losses and to verify the efficiency of insecticides in the reduction of this damage. The experimental design was a complete randomized block with five treatments and four replications. The treatments were: 1) fenitrotion - 1,0 kg a.i./ha; 2) methidathion - 0,32 kg a.i./ha; 3) azinphos-methyl - 0,4 kg a.i./ha; 4) endosulfan - 0,7 kg a.i./ha; and 5) control. By the results it was concluded that the insects which favour diseases caused by cotton boll were: Anthonomus grandis, Horcias nobdellus, Dysdercus spp. and the pathogens causing boll rot were Xanthomonas malvacearum var. Campestris and Colletotrichum gossypii. It was observed that the best treatments were endosulfan and methidathion.
