Abstract

Between 1985 and 1988, at Gararu, Propriá and Poço Verde in Sergipe, Brazil, three cycles of selection among and within half-sib families were realized on the maize population CMS 28, aiming to obtain a better yielding and more adaptive material to this region. The families were evaluated using two simple lattices 10x10 obtaining one cycle selection year. The estimates of additive genetic variance obtained in original and I cycles varied from 405,00 to 625,10 (g/pl)2, while in cycle II were lower due water stress. The estimated mean gain for weight kernel with the three cycles of selection was 10.60%. The magnitude of the estimates and the high values for narrow sense heritability and genetic variation coefficients expressed the variability of this population to continue a breeding program.
