A classification of variation coefficient was proposed for corn growing of characters of plant height, ear corn height, 100 seeds weight, ear corn number, ear corn weight, seed weight and prolificacy based on data obtained from 66 theses in plant improvement and Genetic area. The variation coefficients (CV) were classified according to the average (A) and standard deviation (SD) of the character, according to Garcia's (1989) proposal: low [≤ A - 1 SD]; average [(A - 1 SD) < CV ≤ (A + SD)]; high [(A + 1 SD) < CV ≤ (A + 2 SD)] and very high [> A + 2 SD]. There was a good agreement between the classification proposed and that of Pimentel-Gomes (1985) for ear corn number, ear corn weight, seed weight and prolificacy. However, for plant height, ear corn height and 100 seeds weight, the classification proposed was more apropriate than Pimentel-Gomes (1985).
