New cotton cultivars for the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil: EPAMIG-4 (Redenção) and EPAMIG-5 (Precoce-1)

Abstract

Two new cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) cultivars, EPAMIG-4 (Redenção) and EPAMIG-5 Precoce-1) released by Empresa de Pesquisa Agropecuária de Minas Gerais (EPAMIG) are available for cotton growers of the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Their agronomic characters and fiber traits are described in absolute values and in comparison with the check cultivar utilized. The former was derived from a election in individual plant basis on a production field of cultivar IAC-17 and is recommended for planting in all cotton-producing regions of Minas Gerais. The latter was selected from the introduced strain C-25-1-80, and is recommended for planting in the northern areas of the same State. Both are high yielding cultivars under irrigation or dryland conditions and present excellent agronomic performance together with high fiber properties.
